Inspirational Travel Books

The Mindful Traveller By Nina Karnikowski.

There comes a time when you are travelling and you begin to reflect on the incredible life you have already created for yourself. All your passion for the world you have had the privilege to experience ignites a desire to protect our natural world. This also comes with a helplessness for our current situation. Nina unravels how she tackles these feelings in her brilliantly written memoir. All of her ideas are expertly woven into stories about incredible travel experiences and defining moments in her life. My heart felt full connecting to her stories and questions about life, many of which I have had over the past year.

Tracks By Robyn Davidson

Unlike other novels that focus on drawing out the beauty of travelling, this memoir respects the harshness involved with venturing through the most remote parts of Australia in the 1970’s. In this book, Robyn Davidson reflects on her time training camels in Alice Springs to embark on a 2700 km (1700 miles) walk through the desert to the crystal waters of Western Australia’s coast. The result is an honest, courageous and truly remarkable read that reminds us all of the power we hold within.

Hearing Birds Fly By Louisa Waugh

Escape into the Altai Mountains of Mongolia, famed for their eagle hunters with this read. Set against the backdrop of magic Kazakh mountains, Louisa shares her year-long experience making friends and mistakes. All while learning to survive in a place with some of the harshest winters on earth, food shortages and a lifestyle that relies solely on necessities.

Travel Films

Under the Tuscan Sun

This film needs no introduction. Adapted from Frances Mayes 1996 novel, the divorced writer buys a villa in Tuscany and learns how to make a life in small-town Italy. It’s a fun watch with all the romance, comedy and Italian vistas you want!

Under the Tuscan Sun

Wild

Another famous novel adaptation, Wild is an exciting journey centred around rebirthing your soul. The way to do this, embrace a challenge that seems far too large for yourself and then face the suffering that comes with it. In short, Cheryl Strayed takes on the monster 1,100 mile-long Pacific Crest Trail (without much preparation) and discovers herself.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

This is a very funny film that is not about travel per se but nonetheless showcases some amazing landscapes in New Zealand. The plot is about a young boy who runs away into the wild and is joined by his grumpy uncle. This comedy is directed by Taika Waititi so expect dark humour, wit and gorgeous scenery in bucket loads!
